Where to place feedback in a WinForm

by Roland Schumacher alias GENiALi 12. August 2008 -- 296 words  -- 1 mal gelesen

At the moment I am preparing for the MCPD for Windows applications. In the book for the preparation topics will join treated, in my view, the basics, that is to say to the 70-536. But there are topics that interest me. Many questions I had so far, will be answered in the MCPD.

Today was the subject of validation of input and, above all, where are the message displayed when an error is found. Validate is called for example: the field is blank, which should not be there or enter of a specific formatting is the equivalent.

Status bar
If you ask a developer where we should issue such messages, the status bar is often mentioned. To be a very bad solution. Reportedly left Microsoft in the VB.NET team the following attempt. In the access, the following message was reported in the status bar.
"If you notice this message and tell the usability lead, we will give you $15."

It was reported by anyone. The Stautsbar is so not or poorly observed. There therefore emits no messages.

Tool tip
As I understood that the implementation for the error message and the normal messages is just too expensive. Allegedly also unsuitable.

Colored checkbox
What is also very popular, also for me, that the field will be red. But when one thinks of visually impaired that is also a very very bad solution. Usually the field is then red what the contrast is not contrary to comes.

What is right
What is the right way?
The error provider. Can you simply on a control bind and emit the message. The provider then produces a flashing red circle with an exclamation point in it in addition to the broken control. The message is displayed in the ToolTip.

Well, I know what I should apply in the future.
